Vocabulary Matters!
Math vocabulary plays a critical role in students’ ability to understand instruction, interpret word problems, and explain their thinking. For many learners, especially English Language Learners (ELLs) and SLIFE students, math difficulty is often rooted in language, not the math itself.

Many students have not retained key math terms, never received explicit math vocabulary instruction, or are learning math in English for the first time. SLIFE students may have had limited or interrupted exposure to formal math instruction altogether. Without targeted support, these students struggle to access grade-level content, participate in mathematical discussions, and make sense of assessment questions.

Pre-Teaching Math Vocabulary
What is Pre-Teaching?
Pre-teaching is intentionally previewing key math vocabulary and ideas BEFORE instruction. This helps students recognize them when they appear during the lesson.

The goal is to have students recognize the terms, not to have students master them.
​
Students don't need to explain or use the word yet, they just need to think "I've seen this before."
